Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show With Passwar D, EPS. Crete (Part 2): Live on Balos Lagoon, Kissamos

SECRETIVITÈ, Live DJ Set by Passwar D,  Balos Lagoon, Kissamos, Crete, September 24, 2014

In this episode of Alien Vibe From the Earth Radio Show, we traveled back to 2014 to share with you the second of the 3-part recordings of the live sets with Passwar D on Crete island. Click here to listen to the Part I.

As mentioned in this past New Year EPS. 1af1 "Unforgettable", good music stands the test of time. In the electronic music sphere, it is often encouraged to promote the latest, the newest, and the hottest of the moment. Many producers created wonderful music that never got to be played enough in public. With the listeners relying more and more on algorithm-driven playlists provided by a platform like Spotify, it becomes even harder to discover music that is on the "non-conforming" side. Hence, at DJSD, we made a point to bring back DJ sets we love from the past by Passwar D so we can help to resurface some of those marvelous tracks.

We love music that is filled with complicated textures, nuanced intricacies, and emotional soundscapes that transcend us to a different place and time. Many of Passwar D's live sets reflect his experiences at a given time. Each track for the set was selected to convey the feeling evoked by such experiences. The progression of the set is the direct reaction to the visceral stimulus. They are always an emotional undertaking. The tracks in those live sets acted like paragraphs in a book. They help to shape the narratives that form emotional storytelling.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy the episode. If you like this episode, please stay tuned for Part III that will be released in September. Together with Part I, this 3-part mixes bring the listeners back to the evenings in the early fall on Crete island where local people gathered together to marvel at the glorious sunset while dancing away into the darkness. After the peak of tourism, it is always good to have the nature all to yourself!

Robo Tribe (Magdalena Baczewska Remix)

Robo Tribe was written during a time when people all around the world have been fighting for their voices to be heard. In response, Passwar D dreamed up this future of man and machine, living peacefully in a symbiotic way. Human uniqueness is nurtured and amplified in this new world. Technology helps man to celebrate individualistic dynamism. It is not about good over evil or virtuosity over ignorance. It is about the acknowledgment of the multidimensionality of homo sapiens. In this future world, technology and artificial intelligence help humans break free from constraints. Artists can travel back into history, resurrecting the lost knowledge, infusing ancient crafts with modern technology, and coming up with creative ideas with roots in the past and the future. It is within this context, Robo Tribe (Magdalena Baczewska Remix) was conceived.

Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show EPS. Fjords With Passwar D

The title of the episode gives away the idea behind: an epic spring road trip along the most dramatic coastline in Scandinavia. There is nothing more transcending than listening to the music that transports you to a different place. The collective experiences of confinement in the past year have made many of us daydream about the exotic places we wish to visit. It is one of such moments that prompted Passwar D to create the mix for Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show May Episode.

Have you been to Fjords during May when wildflowers start to bloom and sunshine is plenty? Imagining that you are driving on the narrow, man-made rock trail without sight of other tourists while breathing the icy yet salty air and blasting tracks from Mr.diamond, Gaetano Parisio, Dubspeeka. Or, perhaps, we are zigzagging the serpentine-like Trollstigen pass, admiring the mighty mountains and landscapes of early summer while feeling the beats pumping.

Episode FJORDS is a rich and textured mix with a clear intent. It is designed to take you to different places from the comfort of your own home. It is about escaping reality, finding peace within oneself. Each track was selected for its unique auditory quality. The experience varies depending on how you listen to it. Try to listen to it quietly in the background first. Then, listen to it again with the volume turned up. Two very different experiences will occur!

Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show EPS. Dama With Passwar D

Cinematic and hypnotic, Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show 2021 Episode Dama opens with Alexskyspirit’s TXL2ATH Original Mix from his Quartz Rec. debut album, District X17. As a state of mind filled with mystic suspense, TXL2ATH is a texturally minimalistic track that is spacey and atmospheric. This vast-in-space ambiance quickly morphs into a darker, more agitated, and very eerily cosmic openness supplied by Talismann's tune, Desert Rose (Original Mix). Those "supernatural frequencies" form a massive soundscape with an orchestrated ambition, pushing forward by continuous drum beats and creating the kind of anxiety that only occurs when facing the unknown. Then, here comes the relief: the playful, optimistic, and cheerful track of Sebastian Mullaert Kikaqu (Original Mix) that leads us straight into the belly of a happy dance tune, Radio Waves (After Dark) by Spencer Parker, a London-born, Berlin-based artist.

Judging from the first part of Episode Dama, it is apparent that Passwar D used every single track to craft a twist and turn that mimics human emotion.

"There is so much unpredictability in our environment. One can feel happy, sad, desperate, and back to hopefully within one single day. I want the mix to be the mirror of this ever-shifting emotion."

Passwar D, March 2021

As for the selection of tracks, Passwar D opted in for a non-purist approach, masterfully combining multiple forms of electronic music, from the ambiance, electronica, dance, house, techno, and indie, into one single mix. The reason behind the choices is partly due to his current inclination towards multi-genres storytelling, and mostly as a nod to the articulation of human emotion complexity.

Now, if you are wondering where Passwar D decided to take us on this sonic voyage? Please stay on and listen to the entire episode.

Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show EPS. arc1 With Passwar D

Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show 2021 Episode arc1 is a 44-minute, 10-track sonic voyage, curated and live mixed by Passwar D. The journey starts with a state of dreamy sounding deep space and slowly picks up the groovy breakbeats, suspending percussions, and flowy synths. The extended transition into the 3rd track is expansively immersive. Lingering synths give away so elegantly to the spacy melody while the percussion and deep sub-bass drive the progression forward with plenty of nuanced details.

The mix continues to evolve with East LA Tek drops tough beats and rugged bassline, anz offers up a minimal beat track with sharp vocal cuts, and Joannes provides a temporary return to the hypnotic tripyness with its quirky grooviness that is both otherworldly and deep.

Echoing Passwar D's own fascination around the human and the machines, Syrte's "Obedience Paradox" is part of five electro tracks that, according to Science Cult, explore the "delicate nature and moral implications regarding humanity's evolving relations with machines'. This dark and mechanically sounding repetition is further heightened with the rhythmic built-up from track 8, pushing the mix to reach its true climax around the 30min mark.

Further development is nonlinear. The last 3 tracks are interwoven together to cool down from the pinnacle, moving the hyperchaotic instability into a jungle tribal banger that abruptly gives away to a final ending that is nothing short of a party house anthem filled with Latin-inspired vocal lines and surging tech house grooves. Surprise? Yes. Satisfied? Totally.

AVE EPS. arc1 is a dramatic mix that manages to pack a multi-dimensional state of emotions in less than 45 minutes. It is filled with masterfully crafted transitions that blend the mix into one engaging story. Listening to it in one take if you can. Savoring all the aural subtleties, slowly, and mindfully.

Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show EPS.1af1 "Unforgettable" With Passwar D

An Almost Chronological Summary of the Sound From 2010 to 2020

The Alien Vibes From the Earth Radio Show Episode 1af1 "Unforgettable" by Passwar D is a highly artistic articulation of a 54-minutes, 12 tracks live DJ mix, offering the listeners an overview of the magnificent and aspirational soundscape of the second decade of the 21st century.

The mix chronologically transitions through each year of the 2010s and into the first year of the new 2020 decade. 11 out of the 12 tracks were curated in reflection to the sound of the decennium with each track representing the given year based on its release date. This long winding sonic journey starts by introducing us to human sentimentality. It then leads the listeners into a spiritual chanting of the medieval, the tribal beats, and the techno arousal of the machines, aliens, and space travel. The 12th track, Passwar D's 2020 single release, Xhjduik (pronounce as "such do.ee.k") (Original Mix), was used in the middle point of the mix to spice up and embellish the mega-climatic escalation of tensions from Visual Capture (Luke Slater Remix) (2015) by Slam, and into the next record thereafter, from Architectural, Elliptical Storm (Original Mix)(2016). Denying the expectation of the complete machine takeover, the mix takes an unexpected turn after the climax with an extended and intertwined fusion of three tracks, Derek Plaslaiko's Praia Da Amalia (2018), Richie Hawtin's CLOSE combined (Moving Forward) (2019), and Tiga's 3 Rules (Deewee Unreleased Mix) (2020). Here, Passwar D masterfully combined acid, spoken words, and a playful electropop to imaginatively release us from the buildup tensions, ending this narrative with a sense of humor and cheekiness.
"Embracing tension, it is here to stay. Dancing with it, creating fun out of it, celebrating it and the tensions will eventually resolve."

Immersion, Remembering José Padilla

José Padilla has been a constant inspiration for all of us here at DJSD. His ability to use a wide range of styles of music to tell a sonic story that expands hours at a time was a pure gift. The key architect of "Balearic beat", Padilla popularized the upbeat form of electronic dance music through his live DJ sets and the releases of the infamous Café del Mar compilation series. This chill, soulful, yet groovy, and optimistic vibe feels like a breath of fresh air in 2020 when many have a weight of a thousand tons on the shoulders.

Unfortunately, on October 18th, it came the sudden news that José Padilla had passed away at the age of 64 in Ibiza. This saddens us all. It is only days after the arrival of the news, we start to think about how we can pay tribute to Padilla.

Back in 2003, Velizar in the mix was the resident DJ at Midway, New York. The spirit at the time called for freestyle expressions, which reflected itself in New York's club culture. After a long night of techno and house, Velizar would often entertain the inner cycle with an early morning sunrise set. It was an intimate, personal, and meandering after party, and very much in the spirit of the Balearic Beat. As put by Mixmag in July 1990, "What the 'Balearic concept' has taught us is that it doesn't matter what genre the track falls into, as long as the beat 'n' groove move the feet and what's on top of 'em is pleasing to the ear." It was a pure expression.

We dug into our archives and found one recording from those early morning sessions, titled Immersion. It feels appropriate to re-introduce it as our way to pay respect to José Padilla, the Godfather of Chillout. His style of music has made the idea of sunset and sunrise such beautiful memories for people. We hope that Immersion will remind all of us of his legacy and what beautifully crafted music story can bring to us.

R.I.P.  José Padilla.

Passwar D - Alien Pets (Break Mix)

For the fourth and the final teaser before the official worldwide release, the cosmic frequency creature Passwar D remixed Alien Pets from his debut album “Personal Cosmology” with a melange of sounds, effects, textures and rhythms that reflected his bewildered curiosities on the world around him.

Groovy and minimal, Alien Pets (Break Mix) combines drum beats with abstract modular synths, transforming the track into a textural aura of lights. The deliberate application of white noise as the leading sound effect is a challenge Passwar D set for himself.

“ I was eager to push the possibilities when using effects that are as popular as white noise. Will there be any new territories I can reach? Can I introduce something interesting? I was not sure, although the idea thrilled me.”

The less-than two and half minutes mix is indeed a fine study on sound experimentation. It successfully married a dope head-nodding beat structure with a cosmically atmospheric ambiance all while keeping the listeners wanting more.

“If you listen to the original mix first, then this one, I think you will get a sense that I am making some sort of journey and this imaginary yet unknown journey is not over at the end of track. It feels there should be more places to go to... Perhaps, there will be more to come… perhaps, in the end, there will be this mega track that combines all the remixes … The possibilities end when the imagination stops”  Passwar D chuckled.

Passwar D - Reasons vs Impulse (Church Techno Mix)

This month, the alien frequency creature Passwar D is back at it again. Reason vs Impulse, his third single release from the debut album "Personal Cosmology", is an experimental sound voyage of techno and electronica. It juxtaposes the beats of the classic 808 drum machine with the mystical and magnificent sounds of the church pipe organ. A TB303 bass riff is introduced as a surprise in the middle section. Liquified and distorted with the peculiar synth effects, it further intensifies this techno saga and ushers the listeners into a spatial vacuum with an increasingly heightened sense of euphoria.

Scheduled to be released on August 7th, one day before Roland 808’s 40 anniversary, Reason vs Impulse is a 3 1/2 minute celebratory tribute to this classic drum machine. The recording provides a passage to the captivating explorations into the 808's robotic and spacey sounds. And this time, it is to accompany the highly synthesized and sometimes distorted melodies.

Exemplifying Taro (Roland's founder) and his philosophy in simplicity, the track’s schematic approach in structure and instrumentation is intentional. Using the drum machine in its purest form allows Passwar D to focus on applying multi-dimensional dynamics to the synth melody lines. First, the drum beats kick off the track. Then, the melodic sounding of the pipe organ takes the center stage. The melodic line morphs itself throughout the track until the end when the steadfast beats of 808 re-emerge from the background and end the piece with its distinctive sound.

Reasons vs Impulse is Passwar D's attempt to apply the foundation of simplicity in his music-making. It is about leveraging systematic reasoning to guide humanistically impulsive tendencies. Ikutaro Kakehashi, aka Taro, had the vision to create electronic musical instruments that were easy and simple to use. And, he built one of the best companies in the world for that. Passwar D, deeply inspired by Taro's disciplines, applied his principle in simplicity to his usage of 808 drum machine. Yet at the same time, he managed to successfully unleash his very strong inclination toward human impulsiveness.

"I wanted to strike a balance. I want to use this drum machine the way it is without embellishments. Then, I want something really out there. Something very impulsive. No reason. No logic. Purely visceral. So, there came the idea of pairing church organ with Roland 808".
